Introduction
This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform a glue test on the Rotary Press. The glue test is critical for ensuring that the correct amount of adhesive is applied during production, maintaining product quality and consistency.
Time Required:
Approximately 10 minutes
Items Required:
- Test board (between 2-4 meters long)
- 2 x A4 pieces of paper
- Electronic scales
- Stapler
- Steel rule
- Pen
- Press Adhesive Application Rate Test Sheet
Prepare the Test Board
- Choose a test board that matches the size of the current production run (eg. thickness and depth). The board should be between 2 and 4 meters long to avoid triggering sensors that require the OPR process.
Prepare the Paper Samples
- Take the 2 A4 pieces of paper and fold each one in half along the short edge.
- Tear along the fold using a steel rule, resulting in 4 pieces of paper, each measuring 210mm x 90mm.
- Label these pieces of paper as 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Weigh the Paper Samples
- Using the electronic scales, individually weigh each piece of paper.
- Record the weights on the Press Adhesive Application Rate Test Sheet. Ensure there is no breeze and that the paper does not touch the body of the scales, as this could affect the reading. If necessary, fold the papers in half again to prevent sagging.
Attach Paper Samples to Test Board
- Evenly attach the labeled paper samples to the top of the test board using a stapler.
- Ensure that the first and last pieces are placed no less than 200mm from the ends of the board.
- When stapling, make sure the staples are positioned on the sides of the board, not on the top surface.
Isolate the Press at the HMI
- Isolate the Press using the HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and place the test board onto the infeed belt.
- Push the board past the HSP gate to ensure the target speed is reached before the glue application begins.
Set Glue Application
- On the Glue HMI Control Panel, change the glue count to 2 and reset it. This setting ensures that glue is applied to the test board.
Run the Test Board
- Set the press to Auto mode and run the test board through the glue applicator.
- Pause the process once the test board has fully passed through the glue applicator.
- If the test board gets “kicked” off the deck, it indicates the board was too long, and the press HMI will require the OPR process. Ensure to change the glue count back to 0 and reset it.
Retrieve the Samples
- Isolate the press at the HMI again and pull the test board from the line.
- Remove the paper samples from the board
Weigh the Samples
- Weigh each one again using the electronic scales.
- Record the new weights on the Press Adhesive Application Rate Test Sheet.
Enter Glue Test Data
- Enter all recorded data into the digital version of the Press Adhesive Application Rate Test Sheet, located here: Glue Application Rates PRESS-2024.xlsx
- The digital sheet will calculate the glue application rate in grams per square meter (g/m²) across all test samples and provide an average for the entire board.
Analyse the Results
- Compare the glue application rate across the 4 paper samples and the average result with the targeted application rate displayed on the Glue HMI Control Panel.
- Adjust the GSM amount, start time, and finish time of glue application on the Glue HMI Control Panel as needed to meet the desired specifications.
Well Done!
- Performing the glue test ensures that the Rotary Press is applying the correct amount of adhesive, maintaining the quality and integrity of the final product. Regular glue tests should be conducted to verify that the glue application system is functioning properly and consistently.
