MODULE 3 – HIGH SPEED PLANER
Introduction
In this lesson, you’ll get an overview of the High-Speed Planer (HSP) workstation and its critical role in the production process. You’ll learn about the key components, such as the laminate decks, planer, and control panels, and how they work together to ensure efficient and precise planing for laminated beams.
Safety, PPE & Emergency Procedures
Safety is a top priority when operating the HSP. This lesson covers essential safety protocols, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), understanding emergency stops, and following lockout/tagout procedures to ensure a safe working environment at all times.
Pre-Operational Checks
Before starting any production run, it’s vital to perform thorough pre-operational checks. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to inspect the machine, verify safety systems, check the cutter heads, and ensure the HSP is ready for operation without any issues.
Operating the Planer
This lesson focuses on the core process of running the High-Speed Planer. You’ll learn how to use the control panels, manage feed speeds, monitor timber as it moves through the planer, and ensure consistent quality during the planing process.
Loading Laminates
In this lesson, you’ll learn the step-by-step process for loading laminates onto the laminate decks. You’ll understand how to follow the recipe from the Stirling system, transfer the laminates between decks, and prepare them for planing, ensuring smooth workflow and correct sequencing.
Size Adjustments
Changing the size of laminates for different production runs requires precise adjustments. This lesson teaches you how to safely and efficiently adjust the planer’s settings, including the width and thickness of laminates, to meet specific production requirements.
When Down, Do - Downtime Management
Machine downtime can happen, and knowing how to respond is crucial. In this lesson, you’ll learn what to do during unexpected stoppages, how to troubleshoot common issues, and how to properly document downtime to keep production on track.
Post-Operational Checks
After each shift, post-operational checks are essential for maintaining the HSP. This lesson guides you through the process of shutting down the machine, cleaning the workstation, and ensuring everything is in place for the next shift.
Competency Quiz
The final lesson tests your understanding of the HSP training. You’ll complete a competency quiz that covers key topics from safety procedures to machine operation, ensuring that you’re fully prepared to operate the HSP independently and efficiently.
